How It Works

After placing your order, provide the photograph you would like used for your lithophane.

Your image will be prepared specifically for lithophane printing, converted into a 3D model, and printed with varying thicknesses that reproduce the light and dark areas of the photograph when illuminated.

Please use the Customization notes field when ordering to include any requests that may not be obvious from the photograph, such as:

• Which people or subjects should be emphasized
• Whether part of the image should be cropped
• Any specific orientation or framing preference
• Whether there are background areas you would prefer minimized
• Any other details that may not be clear from the image itself

Photo Recommendations

For the best results, please provide the highest-quality original photograph available.

Images generally work best when they have:

• Good lighting
• Clear facial or subject detail
• Strong separation between the subject and background
• Minimal blur
• Reasonable contrast between light and dark areas

Photos taken directly from a camera or phone will generally produce better results than screenshots, compressed social-media images, or photographs of other printed photographs.

Older or lower-quality photographs may still work, but the finished lithophane can only reproduce the detail present in the original image.

Image Cropping

The original photograph may need to be cropped or adjusted slightly to fit the proportions of the lithophane.

Important people or subjects near the extreme edges of a photograph may not fit well into the final design. If there is anything that must remain visible, please mention it in the Customization notes field.

Material

The lithophane is produced using light-colored 3D printing filament selected to transmit light and reveal the image when illuminated.

The surrounding frame or housing may be produced in a different color depending on the available product options or your requested finish.

Please use the Color or finish request field if you have a preference that is not already covered by the available product selections.

Lighting

Lithophanes are designed to be viewed while illuminated. When the night light is turned off, the image will appear as a raised or textured monochrome panel rather than a conventional printed photograph.

When illuminated, the varying thickness of the lithophane creates the visible photographic image.

Please Note
The appearance of the finished lithophane depends heavily on the quality, lighting, composition, and contrast of the photograph provided.

Because the image is created through variations in material thickness rather than ink or full-color printing, the finished lithophane is not a color photograph. The image appears primarily through light and shadow when illuminated.

Minor layer lines and small surface variations are normal characteristics of the 3D printing process.

Each lithophane is custom made from the photograph you provide, so exact image appearance and fine detail will vary from order to order.
